To All Members of the Hokie Family,
These are facts:
People all over the country and the world have adopted Virginia Tech in their hearts as a result of this terrible incident-they have cried with us, grieved with us, flown their flags at half-mast for us, constructed memorials, held candlelight vigils, worn our colors and hats, sent countless messages and pictures to aid us in our grief. Many have declared themselves "Hokies for Today", and many have truly become members of our Hokie Family. Some, including the Wahoos and the ECU Pirates, have given more than generously to the Hokie Spirit Fund.
The question we ask is:
When East Carolina takes the field in Lane Stadium on September 1st, are we going to "boo" them? After their donations and concern for our sorrow? How do we "boo" another member of the Hokie Nation? The extended Hokie Family?
We can't, and we should not. We need to find a way to thank them, all of them.
We would like to see Virginia Tech continue to be a "class act", as we have been throughout this terrible time. We have an opportunity to show East Carolina, all our other opponents, and the nation (who will be watching now more than ever) how much we appreciate their heartfelt sorrow, sincere grief, and their gracious acts of kindness and support. Let's show the world that Hokies continue to gain strength from even this senseless tragedy; let them see 70,000 Hokies in Lane Stadium saying thank you to their extended family and a caring nation.
As they take the field, let's applaud them!
In a recent study of Division I college football Lane Stadium was ranked the most challenging game environment for a visiting team to endure. Virginia Tech fans electrify the atmosphere within Lane Stadium with a powerful, unified presence one must experience to comprehend.
Chris Fowler of ESPN recognized, "It was the amazing spirit of Virginia Tech that helped us take 'Game Day' road shows to a level we'd never imagined"...and, "The ante had been upped for every other school. Virginia Tech set the standard."
The 2007 football season presents an opportunity for the Hokie Nation to again set a new and enduring standard in sportsmanship by warmly welcoming our opponents and guests rather than booing them.
We are all about football...and we are so much more.
Always Proud to be a Hokie,
